General Underwriting Guidelines:

  • Available to Texas employers with at least 20 participating employees.
  • Employer must pay at least 50% of the employee only premium.
  • Enrollment of a minimum of 75% of the eligible employees.
  • Employee census required: Gender, DOB, DOH, Medical coverage and ZIP.

Landmark health bill becomes law

President Obama signed the sweeping health care reform legislation, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.  The law's most far-reaching changes begin in 2014.  Below is a timeline of the major employer related provisions.

This Year (2010)
  • Increases dependent age limit to 26
  • Prohibits pre-existing condition exclusions for children.
  • Bars insurance companies from putting lifetime dollar limits on coverage, and canceling policies except for fraud.
  • Provides tax credits to help small businesses with up to 25 employees.
2014
  • Requires US citizens to have health insurance, or pay a fine ($95 in '14, $695 in '16).
  • Prohibits pre-existing condition exclusions.
  • State exchanges begin.
  • Simplified rating begins.
  • Provides income-based tax credits.
  • Employers fined for not providing coverage ($2,000 per employee).
